3. Nepal to Kailash Mansarovar via Lhasa

The most popular way to Kailash Mansarovar from Nepal is to fly from Kathama to Lhasa, and then take an overland or flight trip to Mt. Kailash.

Fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa

Daily Kathmandu to Lhasa flights operated by Air China, Sichuan Airlines, and Tibet Airlines connect Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu to Lhasa Gonggar International Airport. The flight duration is around 90 minutes, covering a distance of 607 kilometers (377 miles).

Once you land in Lhasa, spend a few days immersing yourself in the city’s charm and landmarks, and give your body the time to adjust to the elevated altitude of the plateau.

Travel from Lhasa to Kailash by Flight or Road

There are two options for you to get to Kailash from Lhasa. One is to take a flight from Lhasa Gonggar Airport to Ngari Gunsa Airport, which lies 60 km from downtown Ngari. Gunsa Airport is the closest airport to Mount Kailash, and the whole flight takes about 2 hours only. However, given the sudden change in altitude from 3570 m to 4274 m, it’s not recommended to fly from Lhasa to Ngari.

The other option is to set out on a road trip from Lhasa to Kailash. Kicking off on the G318 Friendship Highway, you’ll journey through Shigatse. As you continue, the path shifts to the S214, which will ultimately lead you to Darchen, the gateway for your Kailash pilgrimage.

Next, you’ll travel from Gyiong to Saga Town, a crucial hub before reaching Kailash. Here, you can enjoy a hearty meal at one of the decent restaurants and have a good rest. From Saga, it’s a long drive to Darchen, the starting point of Kailash Kora. During the three-day trek around the mountain, you can stay overnight at two of the five monasteries near Mt. Kailash. However, monastery guesthouses can be quite busy during peak months, so you may have to camp in a tent. Bring a sturdy sleeping bag just in case.
