Who needs a Chinese Group Visa and who don’t?

Travelers do not need Chinese Group Visa for Tibet tour in Nepal:

If you hold a passport from one of the countries eligible for 15/30-day visa-free entry to China, you do not need to apply for the Group Visa and find group members. Simply apply for the Tibet Travel Permit with your valid passport.

Travelers can not get Chinese Group Visa for Tibet tour in Nepal:

1. Travelers from these countries: Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Albania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Libya, Mali, South Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia, Tunisia, and Chad.

2. All international travelers who have ever traveled to the above countries within 3 months.

Therefore, we recommend the above travelers to apply for China Visa and then enter Tibet from Chinese cities, like Chengdu, Xining, Beijing, Shanghai, etc.

Travelers need Chinese Group Visa for Tibet tour in Nepal:

Except for the tourists who can’t get a group tourist visa, other tourists entering Tibet from Nepal shall apply for a Chinese Group Visa in Kathmandu.

How to apply for a Chinese Group Visa?

Step 2: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the entry date. (Note: Please do not apply for a Chinese Visa as it will automatically expire when you apply for a Chinese Group Visa).

Step 3: Provide copies or photos of your valid passport to our travel agency. We will apply the invitation letter and Tibet Travel Permit for you.

Step 4: Arrive in Kathmandu in 4 days prior to your scheduled departure. Fill the Visa Application Form under the guidance of our guide. Prepare your original passport, passport-size photos, and the visa fee.

Step 5: Our guide take you to China’s Embassy in Kathmandu to submit the application and attend an interview at China’s Embassy in Kathmandu in person. You’ll have your fingerprints recorded.

Step 6: Generally, you can expect to receive your Chinese Group Visa and original passport on the afternoon of the fourth working day following your application. With your visa in hand, you and your group members can travel to Tibet by flight or overland. Upon arrival, our guide will greet you at the airport or Gyirong Port and provide you with your Tibet Travel Permit.

What documents shall I offer for Chinese Group Visa application?

1. Valid Passport: Your original passport should have at least 6 months of validity with blank pages. And you also need to prepare a scanned copy to use for your tour in Nepal.

2. Passport-size Photos: A personal photo is required to be a recent 48mmX33mm front passport-size photo on a white background without a hat on.

3. Application Form: Our travel agency in Kathmandu will prepare the application form for a Group Visa to Tibet in the office and wait you to fill in it.

How long does it take to get my Chinese Group Visa?

Generally speaking, it takes 4 working days to process your Chinese Group Visa in the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu (Mon to Fri during office hours). For an urgent visa, it takes 3 working days. The Chinese Group Visa must be processed through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu with the original passport. So, the Chinese Group Visa can’t be applied for until you arrive in Kathmandu, which means you need to arrive in Kathmandu at least 3-4 working days in advance.

If I already have a Chinese Visa, do I need to apply for a Group Visa from Nepal to Tibet?

According to the relevant regulations, a Chinese Group Visa is required for any travel into Tibet from Nepal. If you already have a Chinese Visa, you are not advised to enter Tibet from Nepal as your previous Chinese Visa will be invalidated when the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu issues a Group Visa. You can travel from Chinese Mainland to Tibet by flight, train, or road.

Do I still need a Chinese Group Visa to enter Tibet from Nepal with a visa-free passport?

With a passport from a 15/30-day visa exemption country, you don’t need a Group Visa to Tibet from Nepal or a Chinese Visa if entering Tibet from the mainland. Where will Chinese Group Visa be checked in Nepal to Tibet tour?

1. Kathmandu Airport and Lhasa Airport

When you are boarding your flight from Nepal to Lhasa at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, you need to show your original passport and Tibet Group Visa. After you arrive at Xizang, our local tour guide will hold your original Tibet Travel Permit to pick you up at Lhasa Gonggar Airport.

2. Gyirong Port

3. Other Check Points

Your Chinese Group Visa will be checked in the following places: hotels, security points, train stations, airports, especially at the airport from which you fly out of China. So please take care of it till you already leave China.
